View effective capacity details
The effective capacity details view provides more in-depth detail about effective capacity including usable capacity and relevant metadata utilization, both of which can impact effective capacity.
About this task
See Understanding resource usage for an overview of resource usage.
Steps
-
Select a storage system running
PowerMaxOS 10 (6079).
The system health dashboard is displayed by default.
- Hover over CAPACITY to view the capacity summary for the storage system.
- Click CAPACITY and select the system or an SRP instance.
-
Click the
Effective Capacity bar chart to view the effective capacity details page.
The effective capacity details page displays the following:
- Physical Capacity - Information about the used (amount of capacity that has been written to SRP), free (amount of capacity available on the SRP), threshold (percentage used linked to the SRP used alert), and percentage used (amount of used capacity as a percentage of total SRP) is displayed. To free up physical capacity resources, check for Storage Groups with unreducible data. If data reduction levels are normal, consider deleting storage groups (see View capacity storage group demand details) that consume a significant amount of physical space. Otherwise, consider adding disks to reach the effective capacity (in TB) supported by the system. When capacity has been added using hard drives, you are notified that this process is in progress. On the Effective Capacity details page, an information icon is displayed next to Physical Capacity. Click the information icon to see information about the addition.
- Effective Capacity Resources- The Effective Capacity Resources number represents the maximum effective capacity the system could support. In order to achieve that either better DRR on existing disk capacity or better DRR and additional disk capacity is needed. The effective capacity resource value shown will adjust relative to the current data reduction savings, and the physical and effective capacity usage. Information about the used, free, threshold (linked to the warning threshold of the Effective Capacity Resources alert), and the percentage used is displayed. A portion of the resources is reserved for effective capacity. If you encountering capacity issues, consider deleting storage groups (see View capacity storage group demand details) that consume a significant amount of effective space, , or alternatively you may want to consider upgrading memory.
- Effective Capacity Usage - Information about the effective capacity used by snapshots, used by the user, and free is displayed. Effective capacity consists of production data (amount that is consumed by the user) and backup data (amount of snapshot change data).
When a threshold is breached, an alert is created. The capacity pane on the overview page, the capacity dashboard, and the respective drill-down pages are updated to indicate where a threshold has been breached.
